Lake Hawea is also located in the Otago Region of New Zealand, not far from Lake wanaka. It has an even higher altitude of 348 metres however it is smaller as the lake covers an area of around 141 km2. Lake Hawea is 35km in length and is, at its deepest, 392 metres deep. The two lakes actually run parrallel and the two valleys are only 8km apart and at their closest point, the lakes are only 1km apart. In 1958 the lake was raised artificially by 20 metres to store more water for increased hydroelectric power generation.
Again we stopped off here at one of the lookout points to get a few pictures.
