Lake Wanaka

Lake Wanaka is located in the Otago region of New Zealand, at an altitude of 300 metres. The lake covers a massive area of 192 km2 (74 sq mi), making it New Zealand's fourth largest lake. It is also estimated to be more than 300 m (980 ft) deep at some points. The lake is 42 kilometres long and at its widest point is 10 kilometres wide. The lake's western shore is lined with high peaks rising to over 2000 metres above sea level.A small town, Wanaka has been formed on the bank of the lake and we spent the night here after returning from Mount Cook NP.

The town had a really cool vibe to it and it seemed like a good place to waste away a few days if you had time. This wasn't possible on our schedule as we bid to cram in as much as we can. Therefore we were only able to have a quick walk around the town at night before walking along the beach in the morning. It was here that we were able to try our hand at skimming stones across the perfectly calm lake. After a lot of rubbish attempts by both of us we soon started to achieve a high average of around 4. However I did manage to get a couple to do 8 but Gemma conveniently didn't see them and didn't believe me!

After driving off from Wanaka town, the road merges back alongside the lake which is another fantastic drive. Again there are plenty of places to pull in and admire the view along the way.
