Nelson

This was one of our last stops on the South Island as we had to catch the ferry to Wellington. This is a tiny little town on the North East of the South Island. It is here that they have a park which they claim is the geographical center of New Zealand. It is a nice walk up to the look out point on the hill where the geographical marker is to commemorate this fact.

The manager of our hostel told us that the actual center was about 20km away but it wasn't as nice a location so they chose this site instead. From up here you had a great view of the town, harbour and the coastline. Looking the opposite direction, away from town, you could see the rolling green hills that emphasised how underpopulated this country is.
